Sustainability at APP

APP and The Pharmacy Guild is dedicated to continually improve its’ environmental impact and strives to demonstrate leadership in the area of event sustainability.

We have undertaken the following activities in an effort to implement more environmentally sustainable practices to reduce APP’s carbon footprint:

Printing

  • using electronic messaging only to communicate with delegates and potential delegates i.e. website, email, electronic newsletters
  • using recycled paper for any materials that must be printed
  • removing lunch tickets and replacing with an icon on name badges
  • minimising printed signage and using electronic signage to reduce production waste/utilising reusable design for signage (i.e. not including dates and times)
  • including all onsite information in the conference mobile app, which eliminates the need for a printed conference handbook and pocket program

Registration

  • replacing all hard copy registration forms with online forms
  • allowing delegates to only print their name badge and function tickets once
  • tear-resistant name badges to negate the need for plastic pouches
  • collecting name badges and lanyards at the end of the event to ensure proper recycling

Transportation

  • selecting a carbon neutral airline or an airline that offsets carbon emissions when booking speaker flights
  • requesting that suppliers and trade exhibitors use a single freight forwarder for all deliveries,
  • reducing the number of vehicles requiring access to the dock and minimizing vehicle emissions

Recycling

  • encouraging exhibitors to use promotional items with minimal packaging, recyclable packaging or no packaging
  • requesting that promotional items (if necessary) are made from recycled materials
  • requesting that exhibitors separate rubbish and recyclable items during bump in and bump
  • placing collection bins for lanyards at exit doors for possible future re-use

Catering

  • including a vegetarian option for lunch each day
  • using disposable cups, plates and cutlery made from recycled fibres or 100% recyclable materials
  • providing beverages in aluminum cans instead of glass bottles as aluminum is easier to recycle

As APP grows, so does the amount of name badges, lanyards and reprinting of badges. At APP2026 to reprint a name badge, a valid ID will be required and there will now be a $15 fee for a reprint (function tickets are not reprinted).

All money collected from a name badge reprint will be donated to the Pharmacy Support Service.

How you can help

Below are some ideas on how you can help us to conduct a more sustainable event:

  • travel with an airline that is carbon neutral or offsets their carbon emissions
  • travel to and from the airport with a group via bus rather than using individual taxis
  • use public transport or walk to and from the conference venue
  • bring a refillable water bottle and keep cup to the event
  • bring your own bag to use in the trade area to place giveaways in
  • access the registration barcode via your mobile phone for self-check in, rather than printing it out
  • only accept promotional items from trade exhibitors that you know you will use in future
  • download the mobile app and avoid printing out programs etc to bring to the event

If you have any questions regarding sustainability at APP2026, please contact us at events@qldguild.org.au
