Terri Bakker
2022 Pharmacy Assistant of the Year

Panel Session: Embrace, Envision, Evolve – the future of Community Pharmacy

Biography

Terri Bakker has worked in Community Pharmacy for the past 10 years. Terri started her career in Cairns, before moving to Hobart in 2020 to continue her career as Retail Manager of a pharmacy in Rosny Park. In 2022, Terri’s pharmacy was awarded the Guild Pharmacy of the Year for Community Engagement. Later that year, Terri was named The Pharmacy Guild of Australia/Maxigesic Pharmacy Assistant of the Year. In addition to her Retail Manager duties, Terri is her pharmacy's NDIS champion, and Terri sees the potential for other community pharmacies to implement NDIS services in the future. Over the past 12 months, Terri has worked with her Rosny Park team to create a new pharmacy brand that will re-invigorate the pharmacy industry and provide accessible, full-scope care to its communities.

Biography

Sara Kemp is the Senior Manager - Full Scope Project for The Pharmacy Guild of Australia's Queensland Branch. A former Canadian pharmacist with over 25 years of experience in community pharmacy, 20 years of which were in pharmacy operations, professional services and business development, Sara has also worked in the areas of medical information and marketing and has practiced across a wide range of pharmacy settings including independent, franchise and big box pharmacies. During her time as President of the College of Pharmacists in the province of New Brunswick in Canada, Sara experienced the updating of the Pharmacy Act to incorporate pharmacist prescribing and injection services as well as technician licensing. Sara believes the evolution of pharmacy practice to a much more patient-centric care model is long overdue in Australia and is excited to be able to continue advocating for the right patient care at the right time and right place.

Biography

Roger Kluth is Head of Operations for Gold Cross Products and Services and also a registered pharmacist. His lengthy career in pharmacy has seen him work with multiple pharmacy brands and organisations, both in Australia and the UK. Roger’s broad range of experience includes retail operations, professional services, category, buying, and management roles for Boots The Chemists in the UK, and Terry White Chemmart, Amcal, Discount Drug Stores and independent pharmacy groups in Australia. Roger’s experience in senior category, buying, and business management positions has provided significant exposure across retail and wholesale operations within the profession, giving him a unique set of skills while also enabling him to build strong and greatly valued relationships with colleagues and pharmacy professionals.

Sharyn McErlean

Biography

Sharyn McErlean has 33 years’ experience in the pharmacy industry, starting her career in 1990 by participating in the first cohort to be offered a traineeship in Community Pharmacy. Sharyn joined the Pharmacy Guild’s Queensland Branch as a Workplace/Trainer Assessor in 2014. Her previous roles include dispensary assistant, hospital pharmacy technician and retail manager. Sharyn holds a Certificate IV in Community Pharmacy Dispensary and a Cert IV TAE. She currently assists with the training needs of all Certificate levels from Cert II to Cert IV as well as S2S3, fee for service course and dispensary courses. Sharyn believes in providing a complete health solution to patients and applies this to her role as a trainer/assessor, where she creates a learning environment for her students to assist them in becoming the best they can be.

Alice Vanderpol

Biography

Alice Vanderpol has worked in pharmacy for nine years, starting out in a small country pharmacy in Victoria before moving to a rural pharmacy in New South Wales, where she undertook a Dispensary skill set and Certificate 3 and 4 in Community Pharmacy Qualifications. During this time, Alice was fortunate to work alongside the first Medspro packing robot in her region, which further opened her eyes to the exciting, ever-changing world of pharmacy. In 2018, Alice was named the National Winner of the Pharmacy Assistant of Year Award, which opened many doors and saw her relocate to Queensland where she is now a Workplace Trainer/Assessor for The Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s Queensland Branch. Education and training have always been an important part of Alice’s role as a pharmacy assistant and she is pleased to now be able to invest her time in the education of other pharmacy assistants.
